Backyard Beats Listing 7/9: Festivals, Coolio and Alex Meixner This Weekend!

Here is a listing of area live music and online music happenings for the weekend and week of Friday, July 9 through Thursday, July 15.

It’s a busy weekend for live music in central PA, with several festivals and concert events taking place around the region.

For festivals, the 5th annual Northern Cambria Regional Heritage Festival will take place Friday night and Saturday along Crawford Avenue in downtown Northern Cambria. This community event will feature plenty of arts, crafts, food and other vendors, plus children’s activities, displays, and live music. Night Train will entertain during the Car Cruise event on Friday evening, and a slate of bands and performers take the stage on Saturday (see the listing below). Fireworks follow the music on Saturday night.

The 16th annual Jackson Heritage Festival happens through Sunday in Vinco, and will also feature live music, along with food, refreshments, vendors, children’s activities and more. See the listing below to see who is entertaining during this year’s event.

And the inaugural Millheim Walkfest of Arts & Music will happen through Sunday throughout Millheim in Centre County. Started partially to fill the void left by the cancellations of the Central PA Festival of the Arts and People’s Choice Festival of Pennsylvania Arts & Crafts this year and last year, the Millheim event will feature live music at six different stage locations throughout the area, along with various arts and crafts displays and vendors, family activities and more. The Walkfest will become an annual event moving forward, and will take place on a different weekend from the two major Centre County Arts Festivals once both return next year.

On the concert front, after the first event was scuttled due to inclement weather, the annual “Summer Sounds Concert Series” is set to finally commence on Friday evening at downtown Altoona’s Heritage Plaza, with area dance party favorites Shallow 9 heating up the plaza. The concert starts at 6 p.m., and admission is free.

And a couple of famous musical names will make their way to the area this weekend. Renowned rapper, singer, record producer and actor Coolio will appear as part of the “Philipsburg Fest” event happening Saturday at the We Are Inn in Philipsburg. Coolio is part of an entertainment slate that also features local bands and other activities. See the listing below for more information.

And for the polka fans, one of the top names in the new generation of polka performers – Lehigh Valley native Alex Meixner and his band – are returning to Altoona’s Unter Uns Musical & Entertainment Society to perform on Friday night. Alex and his band will perform many traditional polka tunes to be sure, but may also give polka treatments to some unexpected familiar songs, from such names as Ozzy Osbourne, Rammstein, Guns N’Roses and more. Tickets at the gate are $15 for the performance, which begins at 7 p.m.

These and many other performances provide lots of options for live music enjoyment during the next seven days, so check out the listing below, pick a show (or two or three), and SUPPORT LIVE MUSIC!
