PSU Student Organization Protests Investigation Regarding ICE Poster

Yesterday, representatives of the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE) gathered at Penn State University to distribute literature and educate students on their First Amendment rights.  The outreach follows a late-January controversy sparked by an Instagram post from the Penn State Student College Republicans, which featured an anti-ICE poster found on the University Park campus.  The university subsequently launched an investigation into the posters, which depicted a hanging agent alongside the caption, “Dead ICE agents can’t kill.”  While acknowledging the posters may be offensive, FIRE maintains that the mere advocacy or celebration of violence constitutes protected speech under the First Amendment.
