Pennsylvania drivers are facing a sharp reality at the pump this week as gas prices across the Commonwealth surge toward historic highs, fueled by escalating Middle East tensions and the onset of seasonal demand. As of today, the statewide average for a gallon of regular gasoline has climbed to $4.57, a significant jump from just $4.26 one week ago. In several regions, including our own, prices have already reached the $4.99 mark, which is 30-cents more than it was earlier this morning. This rapid ascent has placed Pennsylvania within striking distance of its all-time record high of $5.07 a gallon, set in June 2022. With the current trajectory, AAA reports that some areas could see prices hit the five-dollar milestone as early as this weekend. In response to the growing financial strain on households, lawmakers in Harrisburg are actively debating measures to provide immediate relief by implementing a moratorium on the state’s gas tax. Pennsylvania currently imposes one of the highest fuel taxes in the nation at 57.6 cents per gallon, trailing only California and Illinois in total tax burden.
