Big Boy Headed Our Way

big-boy-2

The historic Union Pacific Big Boy steam locomotive passes through our area tomorrow, passing by Huntingdon, Tyrone and Bellwood before stopping at the Railroaders Memorial Museum tomorrow afternoon.  Estimated time of arrival in Altoona will be around 5:15.  It’s expected to go through Tyrone around 4:00.  The worlds largest steam locomotive will be in Altoona through Saturday when it heads to its much anticipated trip around the Horseshoe Curve.  On Thursday and Friday Big Boy will be displayed at Norfolk Southern’s Rose Yard in Altoona from 8:00 am until 2:00 pm.  People wanting to see the train can take a free shuttle from Peoples Natural Gas Field, and the former Macy’s parking lot at the Logan Valley Mall.  On Saturday morning at 9:30 the locomotive will then make an historic trip to the historic Horseshoe Curve which will be a private event for ticket holders.  The event is sold out.  From the Horseshoe Curve it will make one final visit to the Cresson Railroad Park on Front Street.  For more information regarding viewing events visit the Altoona Railroaders Memorial Museum website.  For details on road closures go to altoonapa.gov.  Over one-hundred thousand people are expected in the Altoona area during this event.  Big Boy has chugged along the East Coast this summer as part of the celebrations for America’s 250th birthday.
