A report in the Altoona Mirror indicates that city council has allocated $1 million from its American Rescue Plan funds to create some housing for homeless city residents. At last night council meeting, council people heard of the high numbers of homeless in the city, and that there is a critical need to have shelters in place to get these folks a place to stay. Family services reported that they turned away nearly 2500 people last year from a 16 bed shelter. A proposal to construct a 6 apartment building on Lexington Avenue was approved. Council heard that there are at least 230 people living on the streets of the city.
