The Altoona Mirror reports today that the school board announced its budget for the 22-23 school year, and it contains a deficit of more than $498,000. The board says it has no choice but to raise taxes, even in these difficult times. One member told the mirror that the board does not like raising taxes, but it is the only avenue they have, and that is limited. The hike, if approved, would cost homeowners an average of $40 more next year. Superintendent Darren McLaurin stated that the deficit contains a $100,000 budgetary reserve amount to be used. The increase would produce an extra $200,000 for the district.
