
The Associated Press has reported that former Judges Mark Ciavarella and Michael Conahan have been ordered to pay $200 million to numerous people after it was discovered the two judges were sending kids to for profit juvenile detention centers, and both were getting kickbacks for each child the sent. After the scheme was discovered, the state supreme court threw out more than 4000 juvenile convictions. The 2 judges ordered a shutdown of a county run detention center in Luzerne County and were paid $2.8 million by the builder of the two for profit facilities. Ciavarella is serving 28 years behind bars, while Conahan is serving his time under house arrest for the final 6 years of his 17 year prison sentence.
