Television news reports suggest that the owners of the Homer City generating station say they will begin the shutdown process on July 1st, and will also begin tiered layoffs over the next three months. The coal plant provides electricity to homer city and the surrounding areas, and company officials say they will come up with a plan to ensure that the juice continues to flow into those communities. This will be the last coal plant closing in the state. The plan was the last of more than 60 plants across the state that at one time generated electricity, and employed hundreds of Pennsylvania residents.
