Seven people are homeless today after a fire ripped thru their Altoona apartment building yesterday, on the 100 block of 6th Avenue. A smoke alarm went off yesterday at dawn, inside the structure, which awakened one of the tenants who then proceeded to awaken the rest of the occupants.  One tenant was taken to the hospital with smoke inhalation and one firefighter was also taken to the hospital due to exhaustion and an elevated heart rate. All four of the city’s fire departments were at the scene yesterday. The Red Cross is now assisting those who have been left homeless. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
