A House Republican has announced plans for legislation that would require seat belts on all new school buses beginning in 2029.  Representative Natalie Mihalek’s says a school bus’s design provides for protection for front and rear-end collisions but children aren’t well-protected during side-impact crashes. Currently, federal laws require three-point seat belts to be installed in buses under 110-thousand-pounds. However, above this weight, states and local jurisdictions are left to decide whether or not school buses should require seat belts.
