A group of Senate Republicans has introduced legislation that would help Pennsylvania residents impacted by the train derailment on the Ohio border. State Senator Doug Mastriano says the residents shouldn’t have to pay state income tax on any financial assistance they received from the state and federal governments, insurance companies or Norfolk Southern. Mastriano, who is the chairman of the Senate Veterans Affairs and Emergency Preparedness Committee, says the people affected by the derailment have already had their lives and businesses disrupted and the deduction would help them. Senate Bill 1149 would also be retroactive to any payments received by victims in 2023.
