A sentencing hearing for a man convicted in the 2018 killing of a prison guard began yesterday in Somerset County. Investigators say that prisoner Paul Kendrick, serving time for murder, brutally beat corrections officer Mark Baserman inside a housing unit at Somerset State Correctional Institution. Baserman died of his injuries eleven days later. Kendrick was recently found guilty of first-degree murder in Baserman’s death. Yesterday, Kendrick’s mother expressed her love for her son during an impact statement, and stated he grew up with an abusive father. Baserman’s stepdaughter also gave an impact statement and asked that “justice be served.” The arguments, being heard by a jury, are to determine whether Kendrick should receive the death penalty.
