A house fire on Saturday night in Altoona claimed the life of 64-year-old Sandra Howard, and resulted in injuries to several firefighters. Fire crews were called to the house fire around 10:30 at 105 E. Fourth Avenue. When crews arrived, three people, two of which were children, were hanging out of a third floor attic window, and a fourth was trapped on the second floor. Altoona Firefighters were able to rescue the three on the third floor. Sadly the 64-year-old woman died in the fire. An autopsy on Howard is expected early this week. Several firefighters were also injured while battling the fire, with five firefighters taken to UPMC Altoona, and three others transported to UPMC Pittsburgh. All have since been released, and are expected to make a full recovery. Reportedly, the fire started on the second floor, and an investigation is underway.
