Officials in Clearfield County are warning residents to be on alert after a county resident was scammed out of thousands of dollars. State police in Clearfield began an investigation recently regarding a fraud scheme where a resident was contacted by a person impersonating a court official, claiming a family member was in a car crash, and needed $10,000 for bail. A Lyft driver was sent to the victim’s residence to collect the cash. Investigators were able to track the cash delivery to the eastern part of the state, where the alleged scammer was arrested. It’s believed the scammer used social media to gather information on the victim to gain their trust. Authorities say anyone who receives calls regarding fines, legal emergencies, or bail involving a family member is urged to hang up, and contact law enforcement.
