For our latest “Local Song of the Week,” we head to Harrisburg to check out a number from Almost Honest. Since 2013, this group – now singer and guitarist Shayne Reed, bassist Garrett Spangler, drummer Quinten Spangler and returning addition David Kopp on guitar – has evolved their blend of doom rock, heavy metal, punk overtones and alternative edges into a crisp and powerful mix. The group ratchets up the imagination and adventure with each album, and their latest, “The Hex of Penns Woods,” is their strongest yet! The group taps into Pennsylvania Dutch folklore and myths, plus generates some of their own over the album’s 11 tracks. With its booming doom-esque metal thunder, this number, “Amish Hex,” is about an Amish lad who is picked on by folks from the outside world (in the video, the band members themselves), but discovers a book called “The Hex of Penns Woods,” which unleashes an Amish wizard to deliver payback to the offenders. Almost Honest has steadily expanded their performance range to throughout Pennsylvania, as well as adjoining states and the East Coast. Watch for possible sightings soon in the “Homegrown Rocker” listening area, and keep listening for their adventurous, hard-hitting music on the “Homegrown Rocker!”
