Penn State University plans to shut down its NPR and PBS-affiliated public broadcasting station, WPSU, by June of next year, after the university’s Board of Trustees rejected a proposal to transfer ownership to WHYY in Philadelphia. The proposed deal, which included a $17 million subsidy from Penn State over five years, was unanimously rejected by the board’s Finance and Investment Committee yesterday, due to concerns about financial feasibility and uncertainty regarding staff employment. The move comes in the wake of Congress’ decision earlier this year to eliminate all federal funding for public broadcasting.
