Subramanyam “Subu” Vedam is scheduled for release after more than 40 years in state prison following Centre County District Attorney Bernie Cantorna’s decision to drop the murder charge against him. Cantorna cited difficulties posed by the passage of time in retrying the case after Vedam’s 1988 conviction was overturned in August based on previously undisclosed FBI evidence. Vedam was arrested in 1981 and convicted in 1983, and again after a retrial in 1988, for fatally shooting Thomas Kinser of State College. Vedam has maintained his innocence during this entire time. It is not known presently when Vedam will be released from the Huntingdon State Prison.
