Federal immigration officials have confirmed that Subramanyam “Subu” Vedam was taken into custody at the Mo-Valley ICE Center in Clearfield County, by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) last week. The detainment occurred shortly after Vedam was released from state prison. Vedam was the primary suspect in a 1988 Centre County murder case. His release came days after prosecutors announced they would not pursue a new trial, after Vedem had been in prison for over 40 years. An ICE spokesperson released a statement saying that Vedem is a “career criminal” and convicted drug trafficker, with a rap sheet that goes back to 1980. The statement said that Vedam is a native of India, subject to a final order of removal that was lawfully issued by a federal immigration judge. ICE has not released any information as to what actions it plans to take regarding Vedem.
