Altoona firefighters, Captains Cameron Sunderland, and Nicholas Wukovich were presented with the prestigious Valley Preferred Spirit of Courage award on Tuesday for rescuing three young people from the attic of a burning house in April. The award, presented by a consortium of Allentown-area organizations, recognizes individuals in the state who risk their lives to save others from fire or burns. The harrowing rescue occurred at a house on the 100 block of East Fourth Avenue, where firefighters had been dispatched with reports of people trapped inside. The Valley Preferred Spirit of Courage award is given annually by the Burn Prevention Unit. The celebration, which honored multiple first responders and civilians, took place at DeSales University.
