State Officials Warn Of SNAP Scam

snap-scam

Pennsylvania’s Department of Human Services is alerting residents who receive Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits, of an active phone scam.  The warning comes amid a federal government shutdown that is affecting benefit payments.  Scammers are calling SNAP users and falsely claiming that their benefits are on hold until they verify their eligibility and provide their Personal Identification Number.  Callers often pressure individuals for their PIN and other personal information to “unfreeze” their benefits.  The DHS emphasizes that it will never request personal information through an unsolicited text message, email, or phone call.  Suspicious calls and texts can be reported to the DHS fraud tip line at 1-844-DHS-TIPS (1-844-347-8477).
