Hello Everyone,
Here is the recap of the November 16 edition of “The Homegrown Rocker,” which airs every Sunday night from 8 to 10 PM on Q94 Classic Rock (www.q94classicrock.com), and from 10 PM to midnight on 107.1 and 101.3 Jack FM (www.1071jack.fm)!
Twenty years ago, an Altoona Area High School junior named Ryan Wapner started a nonprofit promotional enterprise with his mother called AnEmergencyScene (AES), with the purpose of staging all-ages shows for the area’s younger live music fans. They booked up-and-coming young local acts, traveling regional acts and even a few rising national names. Within the next 13 years, AES had presented 302 shows, building a large local youth-driven do-it-yourself community along the way. One of prominent participant bands during that run was Pittsburgh’s Punchline, who played numerous shows for those all-ages audiences in the Altoona area, and generated a lot of popularity along the way. The 20th Anniversary celebration of AnEmergencyScene will take place on November 29 at Liberty Hall at Hollidaysburg’s U.S. Hotel Tavern, and Punchline will be the headliner for that event. We spoke with Punchline members Chris Fafalios and Steve Soboslai about their career, their music, their live show, their thoughts and memories about AnEmergencyScene and the upcoming 20th anniversary show. We played several songs off Punchline’s latest album, “Somewhere to Land,” and debuted new songs from Gene The Werewolf, Eternal Boy and Lunatic Revival. We dug out three “Local Music Flashback” feature songs spotlighting AnEmergencyScene participating bands – including a 2007 number from Altoona’s Like A Movie (featuring future NBC “The Voice” contestant Jimmy Mowery), a 2010 song from Altoona’s The Hope Fallacy, and a 2008 Punchline number! And via a texting contest, two lucky listeners won pairs of tickets to attend the AnEmergencyScene 20th Anniversary show! (For those who missed the program, a four-part podcast of this show is available for listening or download from Q94’s website, www.q94classicrock.com.
