The Altoona community is mourning the death of local businessman and philanthropist Steve Sheetz, who passed away Sunday night at UPMC Altoona from respiratory complications at age 77.  Mayor Matthew Pacifico expressed the city’s gratitude for Sheetz’s “tangible love for the City of Altoona,” noting his significant contributions and initiatives.  Sheetz was four years old when his brother Bob founded Sheetz Corporation in 1952, and with his business knowledge and drive, he and Bob grew the company to become one of the largest businesses in Pennsylvania.  Currently there are over 800 Sheetz stores in seven states.  Sheetz is survived by his wife of 56 years, Nancy, and their daughters, Nikki and Megan.  To honor Steve’s legacy his family is asking that donations be made to the Altoona Area School District Foundation, The Central Pennsylvania Humane Society, Gloria Gates Foundation, and Saint Vincent de Paul Soup Kitchen.  Funeral arrangements are being finalized, and details will be released at a later date.
