Pittsburgh-Area Leaders React To Closure Announcement For Post-Gazette

ppg-2

City leaders in Pittsburgh are sharing their reactions to the coming closure of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.  Yesterday, corporate officials with Block Communications, the company that owns the paper, announced publishing will end on May 3rd.   Pittsburgh Mayor Corey O’Connor says he was shocked to learn of the coming shutdown, like many other residents, going on to say he appreciates the hard work that employees of the publication have done for the city.  Allegheny County Executive Sara Innamorato called the loss of the Post-Gazette “devastating for the Pittsburgh region,” adding that local journalism is “critical to democracy.”  A spokesperson for the company says they have lost millions of dollars over the last 20 years, adding that a recent court ruling in favor of union workers at the Post-Gazette has also negatively impacted finances.  The paper has operated since 1786, making it the oldest continuously published newspaper in Pittsburgh, and the first published west of the Allegheny Mountains.
