The Centre County District Attorney’s Office announced today that a felony charge of aggravated assault has been dropped against 18-year-old Gavin McKenna, along with a misdemeanor charge of simple assault, and other related counts, after McKenna allegedly punched a man in the face. Reportedly, the victim was punched on January 31st after an altercation between the two, resulting in the 21-year-old victim requiring surgery for a broken jaw. In a press conference held today, the DA’s office said that while the felony charge of aggravated assault was being dropped, McKenna was still facing a misdemeanor charge of simple assault. Reportedly, after watching surveillance video of the incident, authorities do not believe that aggravated assault is supported by evidence. McKenna is considered to be the number one draft pick in the 2026 NHL Draft, and is playing college hockey at Penn State after leaving the Canadian junior league system.
