Investigators say a plane that crashed outside of a Pennsylvania retirement home last year was well above its weight limit. According to the National Transportation Safety Board, a small aircraft with a family of five onboard was about 500 pounds over the maximum gross takeoff weight when the pilot heard a loud “pop” that turned out to be the cabin door opening. The NTSB said this distracted the pilot, causing the plane to come down and crash in the parking lot of Brethren Village Retirement Community in Lancaster County. The pilot and his son spent weeks recovering in a burn center, while the other three passengers only sustained minor injuries.
