PennDOT Secretary Backs Red Light Cameras Throughout State

PennDOT Secretary Mike Carroll has voiced full support for expanding the use of red-light enforcement cameras statewide.  Pending legislation would allow all Pennsylvania municipalities to install these cameras, which are currently mainly used in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh.  While proponents argue the cameras improve safety and reduce crashes, critics contend they primarily serve as revenue generators, and could increase rear-end collisions.  Fines are capped at $100.  Revenue generated from violations is often directed toward transportation enhancement grants, and improving road infrastructure. The bill is currently in the Senate Transportation Committee.
