Oil Spill In Clearfield Under Investigation

The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection has launched an investigation into a series of mysterious oil spills appearing in the West Branch of the Susquehanna River in Clearfield County this month.  The most recent alert occurred on March 9th when an oily sheen was spotted near a stormwater drain.  Local fire crews arrived on the scene to deploy absorbent booms and containment pads, successfully preventing the substance from spreading further downstream.   Some residents have reported odors so strong they were forced to cover basement drains to manage the smell inside their homes.  While the discharge appeared to originate from a storm drain outfall, investigators have been unable to access specific manholes to trace the line back to a source.  The DEP says an investigation is ongoing.
