PennDOT officials want to remind owners of electric vehicles that they will pay a new road use tax under a newly enacted state law. Act 85 was signed into law last year by Governor Shapiro and charges EV and plug-in hybrid drivers a yearly fee that will go towards maintaining road and bridge maintenance. Drivers of gas-powered vehicles already help pay for such maintenance through the state’s gas tax. PennDOT officials say the fee, which started being collected on April 1st, is applied during vehicle registrations and renewals. EV drivers will pay $200 a year, while plug-in hybrid electrical vehicle drivers will pay a yearly fee of $50. The price will increase next year.
