The Trump Administration announced plans yesterday to expand coal mining on federal lands and provide $625 million to support coal-fired power plants. Under these plans, the Energy Department has required fossil-fueled power plants in Pennsylvania and Michigan to keep operating past their retirement dates in order to meet rising U.S. power demand. This announcement would allow those efforts to expand as a precaution against possible electricity shortfalls. Environmental groups denounced the actions.
