Federal prosecutors allege that Luigi Mangione, accused of killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, inspired others to violence, including the gunman responsible for a deadly attack on the NFL headquarters in July. Prosecutors claim Mangione’s actions aimed to normalize violence as a means of achieving ideological or political objectives. The attack on the NFL headquarters involved Shane Tamura, who fatally shot four individuals before taking his own life. Similar to Mangione, Tamura left behind writings expressing grievances and blaming the NFL and football for causing chronic traumatic encephalopathy. Public figures sympathetic to Mangione reportedly praised Tamura’s actions as a continuation of Mangione’s philosophy. Mangione, is awaiting trial for the ambush killing of Brian Thompson on December 4, 2024. Arrested in Altoona five days after the shooting, Mangione has pled not guilty to federal charges of murder, two counts of stalking, and a firearms offense related to the alleged use of a silencer. He also faces state murder charges in New York, although terrorism-related charges were recently dismissed.
