A Western Pennsylvania lawmaker is introducing a measure that would keep school bus stops away from the homes of registered sex offenders. State Representative Jeremy Shaffer is sponsoring a bill that would prohibit the stops within 300 feet of the listed address of a convicted offender. This issue came up in the Deer Lakes School District, in Allegheny County this year, after parents complained that buses pick up kids in front of an offender’s home. Shaffer’s bill would make school leaders responsible for making sure their stops are in compliance, and it would require that parents be notified if there needs to be an exception.
