Richard Mayer, the former publisher of The Tribune-Democrat in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, has died at age 95. A community leader who guided the newspaper through the decline of the steel and coal industries and the devastating 1977 flood, Mayer was instrumental in the city’s recovery efforts. Mayer became the publisher of The Tribune-Democrat in 1963 after joining the paper in 1956. He retired after a long career that saw him lead the paper through significant challenges. Mayer passed away on Wednesday.
