Subramanyam Vedam, a 64-year-old Pennsylvania man, is currently detained in Louisiana as two separate courts have ordered immigration officials not to deport him after his murder conviction in Centre County was recently overturned following four decades in prison. Vedam, who came to the U.S. legally as an infant, was taken into immigration custody immediately upon his release from state prison and transferred last week to a facility equipped for deportations. An immigration judge and a U.S. District Court have both stayed his deportation pending further review by the Bureau of Immigration Appeals. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is seeking to deport Vedam because of a no contest plea he entered to LSD delivery charges, when he was about 20 years old.
