A Somerset County judge has denied the new trial request for Paul Kendrick, a death row inmate convicted of the 2018 murder of SCI Somerset corrections officer Sgt. Mark Baserman. Kendrick, who was sentenced to death in August, listed several allegations in an attempt to overturn his conviction. Court documents indicate Kendrick’s appeal cited insufficient evidence and juror misconduct, specifically accusing one juror of discussing the trial outside of court. Furthermore, during a hearing last month, Kendrick alleged that he was repeatedly sexually victimized by Sgt. Baserman. Ultimately, the judge rejected these claims, and Kendrick remains on death row. While a new trial was denied at a county level, it’s uncertain whether Kendrick will continue to appeal the verdict to the state Supreme Court.
