Somerset County Sheriff Dustin Weir will face trial on charges of making inappropriate sexual statements to a 15-year-old girl during a “Shop with a Cop” event in December of last year. The alleged victim claims Weir, and another employee took her to the condom section of a Walmart and made comments, while the defense argues the encounter was brief and intended as a joke with the girl’s mother, who at the time was employed in the sheriff’s office. Yesterday in court, the defense questioned the credibility of the victim, noting she didn’t report the incident until five months after it happened, and two weeks after he mother was fired from the sheriff’s office. Weir waived his formal arraignment and remains free on bail. A trial date has yet to be set.
