The annual tradition of tracking jolly old St. Nick as he travels the world tonight again falls to the North American Aerospace Defense Command, or NORAD, as it has for decades. What began years ago as an unintentional phone call from a child to the then-Continental Air Defense Command, has become a joyous occasion for families everywhere, showcasing the lighter side of NORAD’s 70-year-old mission. Over 1,000 uniformed, War Department civilians, and local participants, will man the helms tonight and answer the hundreds of thousands of calls that come in from around the world.
