Altoona City Council has approved a three-year contract with the Mountain City Lodge of the Fraternal Order of Police, the union representing the city’s police officers. The contract includes total pay increases of 20 percentage points over three years—8% in the first year, 7% in the second, and 5% in the third. City Manager Christopher McGuire reportedly stated the significant raises are essential to retain officers, as the city has become a “training ground” for other, higher-paying law enforcement agencies. Before the first annual increase took effect on January 1, Altoona police officers had a starting salary of $53,000. Currently there are 68 officers working for the city.
