Derek Bowser, a 36-year-old inmate from DuBois, died after being found unresponsive in his cell at SCI Smithfield last Friday. According to Pennsylvania Department of Corrections officials, staff discovered Bowser, and performed life-saving measures before he was transported to Penn Highlands Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. Bowser had been serving a sentence of seven months to two years for a reckless endangerment conviction in Clearfield. State police are investigating.
