In a new development for the State College man whose story gained worldwide attention, the U.S. Justice Department’s Board of Immigration Appeals has vacated the 37-year-old deportation order against Subramanyam Vedam. The ruling, issued yesterday restores Vedam’s permanent U.S. residency, and blocks any immediate efforts by federal agents to remove him to India. Vedam spent more than 40 years in state prison for a 1980 murder conviction that was eventually overturned in 2025 after lawyers uncovered evidence that prosecutors had concealed an FBI report. Upon his release from state prison last October he was immediately detained by Homeland Security agents based on an old deportation order related to a 1980s drug case where he pled no contest. While the deportation order is vacated, Vedam remains held at the Moshannon Valley ICE Processing Center in Philipsburg. as his legal team seeks his release on bond.
