Cambria County Commissioners have voted to relinquish the AmeriCorps Foster Grandparent Program grant, ending the county’s direct oversight of a program that has paired seniors with students since the 1960’s. The decision aims to pave the way for another local organization to take over, and revive the program. The reason behind the vote was due to declining participation post-COVID, and uncertainty about federal funding. By officially relinquishing the grant, other nonprofit organizations can now directly apply to AmeriCorps Seniors for a three-year funding cycle. Reportedly, several local groups have already expressed interest in taking it over.
