Farmers across the country, including those here in Pennsylvania, are currently navigating severe economic strain, right before spring planting season, as fertilizer prices spike due to military conflict in the Middle East. Shipping through the Strait of Hormuz —a vital artery for global nitrogen fertilizer—has been crippled, leading to significant delays and supply shortages. Last week the American Farm Bureau Federation sent a letter to President Trump urging immediate federal intervention. The AFBF specifically requested that the U.S. Navy be deployed to secure and maintain safe passage for fertilizer shipments through the Strait to protect U.S. food security. Pennsylvania farmers have already reported price increases of 15 to 25% for fertilizer quotes, since the start of the conflict. President Trump recently indicated that military operations in the region may be nearing completion, which could eventually provide relief to global supply chains.
