A war of words erupted last week between Pennsylvania’s top officials as Governor Josh Shapiro and State Treasurer Stacy Garrity clashed over the conflict in Iran, signaling a sharpening divide ahead of the gubernatorial race. The friction began following Shapiro’s appearance at the National Action Network conference, hosted by the Rev. Al Sharpton. When questioned by reporters about the ongoing international crisis, the Democratic governor labeled the conflict “the president’s war of choice,” a stance he claimed to have held since its inception. He went on to tie the geopolitical strife directly to domestic economic concerns, blaming President Donald Trump for the rising costs of fuel, groceries, and healthcare. State Treasurer Stacy Garrity issued a blistering rebuke of Governor Josh Shapiro, framing his recent foreign policy remarks as “disqualifying” for a potential future Commander-in-Chief. Garrity, a retired Army Reserve officer, and veteran of three tours in the Middle East, accused the Governor of historical ignorance regarding the conflict with Iran. She asserted that the current hostilities were not ignited by the Trump administration, but rather by the “radical Iranian regime” nearly five decades ago. As Shapiro seeks a second term, he maintains a massive financial lead; he entered April with $36.1 million on hand after raising $10.5 million in the first quarter. In contrast, Garrity raised roughly $1 million in the same period, ending the quarter with $1.5 million in the bank.
