According to national news reports, the last 3 Kmart stores remain open. Then latest to close its doors is a store located in new jersey this coming Saturday. After that store closes, there will be 3 Kmarts left…in Westwood NJ, Miami and Bridgehampton on Long Island. Kmart began closing stores across the nation back in 2002 when the corporation filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy. But during that time, the corporation acquired many Sears stores in a last ditch effort to try and save both brands, but that venture failed. Only a few sears stores remain open in America as well. A Columbia university director of retail studies said that both companies could have survived if they had the right guidance, but were mismanaged by people who had no retail business backgrounds.
