According to news reports, the state reeled in some $4.5 billion during the month, thanks in large part to income tax payments made before April 18th. With this news, Gov Wolf once again immediately called for more spending on education. Gov Wolf also quickly took credit for the large numbers, and said he has worked hard to get Pennsylvania into a good financial place, and that the commonwealth is now swimming in cash. Personal income taxes alone drove the large numbers, $4.1 billion for April. The governor said that Pennsylvania would be “irresponsible “ if it not not spend this huge surplus of funds. Republicans disagree with Wolf, saying that the state should hold onto this windfall, in case of a recession, which many feel is right around the corner.
