A report by the Altoona Mirror suggests that Penn State shelled out some $318,000 for its past 6 board of trustees meetings, while in a self proclaimed financial crisis, which resulted in a hiring freeze. The report in the mirror explained that some $155,000 was spent on food for the 6 meetings, which covers 2 days for some 38 board members. The trustees do not get paid for being board members, but they are reimbursed for their travel expenses by the University. The reports also stated that the school reported a deficit of $127 million last year. It was also reported that an administrator recently received a $71,000 pay increase, and that a new vice presidents position was created, during the hiring freeze.
