News reports indicate that someone claiming to be famed actor “Johnny Depp”, reached out to a woman and scammed her out of $40,000 worth of gift cards. The report indicates that the 67 year old victim said just before 11 am on may 4, someone phoned her and told her he was “Johnny Depp”, then somehow talked her into purchasing some $41,470 worth of gift cards. Police say the warning signs of scams include the caller telling you that the call is urgent, and they will ask you to purchase certain name gift cards and the amounts to purchase right away or something bad will happen. Then they will ask you for the gift card number and pin located on the back of the cards, that allows the thief to access all of the money loaded into these cards.
