And yesterday, that reached into Central Pa. Where some 1700 Special Olympic athletes were gathered in State College for their annual summer olympics. But the lingering smoke from those Canadian wild fires led to the heartbreaking cancellation of those games. The announcement came around 10 am yesterday. Organizers said that above all else, the health and safety of the athletes is most important, and the poor quality of the outdoor air was the contributing factor in the decision. Many of the participants have underlying medical conditions that could have been affected by the hazy smoke. There are no plans to reschedule the summer games.
