A death row inmate, convicted of the 2018 murder of Somerset County corrections officer Sergeant Mark Basserman is seeking a new trial and appeared in court yesterday to present his case. During the hearing, Paul Kendrick, who was sentenced to death for the crime, testified for the first time after declining to do so during his initial trial. During the proceedings, Kendrick made allegations of sexual misconduct against Sgt. Basserman, which he claimed occurred while he was held at SCI Somerset. There were also questions regarding a juror during the trial who allegedly had conversations about the evidence before the trial ended. The judge has yet to rule on Kendrick’s petition.
