Motorists in our area experienced ups and downs in gas prices yesterday. Within a period of approximately 24 hours we saw prices go from $4.49 to $4.69, to $4.99, back down to $4.94, and waking up this morning to prices that had dropped to $4.69. Currently the state average for regular unleaded is around $4.64 per gallon. Prices have risen significantly in recent weeks due to increased geopolitical tensions involving the U.S. and Iran, which have affected oil supplies, and sent global crude prices to around $100 per barrel. These are the highest gas prices in Pennsylvania in four years. State lawmakers continue discussing potential temporary suspensions of the gas tax to provide relief. The Commonwealth has one of the highest gas taxes in the nation, at 58-cents per gallon.
