The Department of Homeland Security has appealed an immigration judge’s decision to allow Subramanyam Vedam, an exonerated State College man, to remain in the United States after 43 years in prison. The appeal, coupled with a delayed federal court review of his bond petition, ensures Vedam will remain in ICE detention at the Moshannon Valley near Philipsburg until at least mid-May. After a Centre County judge vacated his 1980 murder conviction, Vedam was released from the Huntingdon State Prison in October. However, he was immediately detained by ICE due to his 1990s deportation order stemming from a separate, decades old LSD sale conviction when he was 19. Vedam has remained in ICE custody for the last six and a half months as the government seeks to deport him to India.
